Take screenshots and video record whatever is happening on your screen. That’s the answer I would go for if you were to ask me “hey George, what does this Captura application do?" If you need to take a screenshot, you can use Captura to capture the entire desktop, a certain window, or just a region of the desktop; the screenshot can be copied to the clipboard or saved locally as a JPG, PNG, BMP, TIFF, or another supported format. And if you need to record a video, you can use Captura to capture the desktop, a certain window, or just a region of the desktop – complete with mouse movements, mouse clicks, keystrokes, and audio.

Captura is a .NET application that doesn’t need to be installed. To get started with it you have to download a ZIP archive, extract its contents, and run the Captura executable (Captura.exe).

As you can see from the screenshots and Quick Look video that accompanies this article, Captura’s interface is made up of a main toolbar and 5 extra sections that conveniently list all the features, functions, and sections. These 5 sections are:

Main – select what will be captured, choose if you want to record audio, adjust the quality level, pick the output folder, and more.
Configure – set a delay, set it so that Captura minimizes to the system tray, pick a format for the screenshots, and more.
Recent – screenshots and videos shot recently are listed here.
Hotkeys – all available hotkeys are listed here; these hotkeys can be customized.
About – pick a different language for the interface.

Captura is free and open source software released under an MIT License.

There’s lots to like about Captura. It doesn’t need to be installed, it has a user friendly interface, it’s very easy to use, it can take screenshots and record video, it supports hotkeys, it’s free and open source.

Pros

Captura doesn’t need to be installed. The interface clearly presents all the features, functions, and settings. Captura can take screenshots and either copy them to the clipboard or save them locally as a PNG, JPG, BMP, TIFF, or another format. Captura can video record your desktop, a certain window, or a region on the desktop, complete with mouse movements, mouse clicks, keystrokes, and audio. Captura provides support for hotkeys. Captura is free and open source software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
